Celebrating Route 66 is a selection of stories by members of Wordwrights—Oklahoma City Christian Writers, in which they share their personal adventures along the Mother Road, the renowned highway created in 1926.
Despite its replacement as a US Highway, Route 66 has not been forgotten. In 2009, Historic Route 66 in Oklahoma was designated as a National Scenic Byway, and we are home to the nation’s first state-sponsored Route 66 museum. Oklahoma has more than 400 drivable miles of Route 66, the longest stretch of highway of any state.
Wordwrights members meet monthly at The Last Drop coffee shop on Lincoln Boulevard in Oklahoma City, located right on historic Route 66. As you read our stories, we hope you’ll be encouraged to explore the Main Street of America, with its roadside motels, quirky attractions, and small diners, and create your own memories to share. After 100 years, there is still much to see and experience along this iconic road. We invite you to join us as we celebrate the Centennial of Route 66 in 2026.
